Introducing the new Dual PCM1792A board for the E7 DAP

The E7 now incorporates its third audio board: the PCM1792A, which includes two PCM1792A DAC chips inside.

Following the classic flagship models from AKM and ADI, the PCM1792A stands as the most renowned flagship DAC from Texas Instruments, widely considered the most faithful representation of TI's signature tuning style. Together, these boards make up the E7's complete "All-Star" Delta-Sigma DAC range.

Thanks to the E7's interchangeable board design, these once-iconic and now scarce DACs are reborn, allowing a new generation of audiophiles to rediscover their singular charm and nostalgic tonal beauty. This is the very essence of the E7's modular design philosophy: a bridge between the golden age and the present.

125dB → 123dB: “From warm and sweet to even sweeter”

As one of the highest-performing classic Delta-Sigma chips, the PCM1792A can achieve an extremely high dynamic range, but only in desktop digital-to-analog converters (DACs) with ±15V power rails and a 9Vrms output. These voltage levels are not practical for portable devices: they consume excessive power, reduce battery life, and require heavy signal attenuation, which leads to a loss of detail.

After balancing power consumption and performance, the first prototype used a ±5.8V power supply for the I/V stage, with a 5.2Vrms output, achieving a dynamic range of 125dB.

In public demonstrations, most listeners praised its sweetness, while some hoped for "a little more." We then carried out an exhaustive adjustment, even checking if the board could meet the official specifications of the PCM1792A with ±15V, and finally confirmed that higher values do not necessarily mean a better musical experience.

Thus, the final production version adopts an asymmetric power supply for the I/V and operational amplifier stages, achieving a dynamic range of 123dB and an output of 4.7Vrms, which provides a richer, smoother, and irresistibly sweet sound.
